Staying Safe in the Summer Heat: A Guide for People Experiencing Homelessness

Updated: Sep 8

The summer months can bring soaring temperatures, which can be especially dangerous for people without stable housing. Prolonged exposure to the heat increases the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. At Harvest Healthcare Solutions, we believe in sharing resources that can help our community stay safe and healthy through every season.

Tips for Navigating the Heat:

  1. Stay Hydrated – Drink water whenever possible. Many public libraries, shelters, and community centers offer free water or access to water fountains. Carrying a reusable bottle can make a big difference.

  2. Seek Shade – Parks, trees, and shaded public spaces can provide relief from direct sun exposure. Even short breaks in the shade help lower body temperature.

  3. Use Cooling Centers – Many cities open cooling centers during extreme heat. These safe, air-conditioned spaces are free and designed to help people escape dangerous conditions.

  4. Dress Light! Literally. – Light-colored, loose-fitting clothing helps the body stay cool. If possible, wear a hat to shield your head and face from the sun.

  5. Watch for Warning Signs – Heat exhaustion can cause dizziness, nausea, headaches, and confusion. If you or someone nearby experiences these symptoms, it’s important to get to a cooler place and seek help immediately.

  6. Check on Others – Summer heat affects everyone differently. A simple check-in on a friend, neighbor, or fellow community member can save a life.

Summer should be a season of safety and connection—not danger. If you or someone you know is facing homelessness and needs support, Harvest Healthcare Solutions is here to help. Together, we can ensure everyone has a safe place to call home.
